Tom Savage has probably had one of the best camps out of a Texans Quarterback in a while. Many people overlook his actual development, and how his mechanics have changed because of Deshaun Watson, the rookie out of Clemson. Savage has had a fantastic camp and coaches have been very positive with their responses on how his practice has been going throughout the offseason. Bill O’Brien has even mentioned that he believes he is the best QB on the team, and will start at the season opener.
Savage, has been great. I have seen the videos from camp, and I saw his first preseason game last week. He has improved, and looks a lot more comfortable in the pocket compared to last year after he was moved into the starting lineup towards the end of the season. Watson is a special player, and has the potential to become the starting QB soon. Do I think that he takes it week 1? I personally do not. Savage has to get injured or horribly mess up for Bill O’Brien to pull him off the field in favor for Deshaun.
Watson will have his time to shine, but I do not think it is anytime soon as long as Savage is healthy. Savage seems too good to lose his spot in this offense for simple mistakes, which he might not even make due to the skill around him. He is in the spot to succeed.
Savage believes “(his) mindset is that this is my team. And I’m not going to let anyone take it” (Sarah Barshop ESPN). Savage has the perfect mindset heading into camp and into the rest of the offseason. He shouldn’t let the media around him to distract him from his job, which is to lead this team. Savage understands that he might not be the starter no matter what, and knows if he makes mistake that Bill will pull him out of the game. His mind is focused on winning the QB battle, and winning games in the regular season, which I can’t blame him for at all.
Best of luck to you Tom.
