Sources: O'Brien To Stay As Head Coach; GM Rick Smith To Step Down

Posted by Devon Bennett on

According to numerous sources from sporting news, and Adam Schefter from ESPN, multiple sources believe Bill O’Brien is staying and Rick Smith may see a reduced role in the front office with O’Brien handling personnel decisions through next year or his extension if he signs one this offseason. The Texans would not give Bill O’Brien this power without an extension due to what can happen in a year with personnel changes, so if O’Brien does gain power in the front office, we know that a contract extension will be in the works.

Sources say Bill O’Brien has already made this pitch to McNair, while others say this will start after the Texans play the Colts on Sunday afternoon. Whichever it is, the plan is clear of what O’Brien wants to have more control over. McNair is very close friends with GM Rick Smith, so he may not end up losing a high jo, rather taking a step down to still be in the front office in a different position. Rick Smith will still be in the Texans franchise, many can guarantee it. O’Brien has been linked to other rumors which broke out earlier Sunday morning saying he has his spot saved and will, in fact, stay with the Texans next season. Rick Smith has been the only question mark going forward, and with the new stories coming out during the Texans final game, we can see more of what has happened this previous week with talks between O’Brien and McNair. O’Brien is for sure a coach that will be targeted by many teams if he was to get fired by the Texans, and this says a lot. O’Brien also knows this can be used for leverage, as well as Deshaun Watson advocating for him as well. O’Brien has most of the leverage and talks this week on an extension after the season is over may be favored for him over Smith.
