According to an NFL source, Mike Lombardi says Texans head coach could be fired at the end of this season on his Ringer show. Bill O’Brien has had his worst season yet as a coach, and his first losing season as one as well. The reason he might’ve had this record you might ask? It might just be due to injuries. Texans have the 4th most players on IR in the league, and the other 3 are NFL draft, top 5 teams. It isn’t a coincidence that O’Brien is struggling this year with most of his superstars on offense and defense out. The only two who have shown up and managed to be healthy are Hopkins and Clowney.
O’Brien should not be even on the hot seat no matter what fans think. This isn’t an issue with O’Brien, if anything it’s an issue with the Texans strength and conditioning coach not preparing his players well enough. The potential is there, and Watson has been very vocal about wanting O’Brien to stay. I’m not an NFL GM but when your superstar QB wants to keep his head coach there to continue the dominance they had, I would take the risk with him. O’Brien hasn’t been bad in seasons past, and he has actually don’t better than most coaches would have if they had the QB’s O’Brien has had to work with. Now some of these QB’s may have been handpicked by OB, but that is beyond the point. O’Brien has the best potential out of any other coach even sitting on the market as well. Who would the Texans even try to shoot for that’s realistically going to make this franchise a contender in the offseason? I guarantee that no head coach would be more pursued than O’Brien is released.
McNair and Rick Smith: Please don’t let O’Brien go, as he wasn’t the problem. This report may be wrong, but more details have yet to be released. This team has potential and had the potential to be AFC South champs with a rookie quarterback, but the injury bug hit too soon.
