RECAP: Texans Have A Long Road Ahead; Drop To 3-5

Posted by Devon Bennett on

The Texans had a horrible and embarrassing defeat to the Indianapolis Colts yesterday. The Texans lost 20-14 and had a chance to throw the game-winning touchdown. Then, poor game management by Tom Savage and the crew led to the plays being rushed and ultimately led to the game losing a fumble. Savage did not look good at all in the first half and started to get a little bit of rhythm going in the second, but the play needs to be better.

The Texans had Savage throw for 219 yards and 1 TD, which Hopkins caught. Hopkins finished with 6 Rec, and 86 yards along with his TD. Hopkins now has scored in 5 straight games which is a Texans record. The rushing attack was okay but only rushed 10 times with Miller who got 57 yards. Not exactly something you want to do with your starting RB when you have a backup QB playing. Lamar did well against the run too, but they abandoned it too early. The game ended on a fumble by Tom Savage who was, you guessed it, strip-sacked yet again. The painful pocket awareness that hurt his chance in week 1 is hurting him now. The system doesn’t seem to be placed around Tom Savage too well, and for a guy who has been in it for around 4 years, it seems like he hasn’t fully mastered it. Whatever system BOB set up for Watson however, is a great one that was trying to be executed with Savage but obviously they do not have the same mobility to be a threat to these specific schemes.

The defense actually played well besides 2 goof plays which ultimately led to 2 scores. Go figure. The Texans allowed an 80-yard TD pass to TY Hilton as the Texans thought he was down by contact but was never touched in the first place. Then we obviously have the first play where TY was wide open for a 45-yard pass to score. These were the two plays were the defense absolutely just goofed, and of course, they were the ones the Colts scored on. IT’s unacceptable, but given the rotations for the defense with all the injuries, I would say this team defended pretty well.

Fairbairn finally missed his first field goal. The day has finally come where the rookie would no longer have a perfect kicking season. In all honesty, it has been impressive and this kid has got a leg to help this team. No more kick returns, or even punting when the FG is anything above 45+ yards. The Texans found a gem in Fairbairn, and will only get better in time.
