It's A Houston Thing

Potential Buyers For The Houston Rockets

Posted by Devon Bennett on

As we all know, the Rockets are for sale. Now something we don’t know is who is going to buy or get a stake in ownership. A lot of names have floated around, but these are the top favorites to land the position, fan favorites or just favorites in general.

#1 The Big Baller

The most obvious and qualified choice is Tilman Fertitta, who owns Landry’s and all of its sub companies. This is probably one of the few Houston people who can buy the whole franchise without having to have a group of other people to help fund. Tilman is a successful man. He has started one of the multiple chain restaurants, and even has his own show that he runs. Tilman would easily be able to profit off the franchise by adding his own restaurants inside, to increase revenue. He would also have easy free promotions for both the Rockets and his restaurant from his TV show or the Rockets arena. All of his business would be linked, which in the end would equal easier and a lot more cash. Why would he say no?

#2 Mattress Mack

Who doesn’t love Mattress Mack? He is a Houston icon, who is flooded over the radio and local TV channels. Mack has been a part of Houston TV, radio and a face icon for over 30 years. When you hear Mattress Mack, you already know what store he is talking for and who he is. He has been a Houston Icon who has helped local Houston fans out when Astros won games, and is always involved with Houston sports in his store. Now, Mattress Mack has some serious dough in his pockets.. Enough to cover a 2 Billion dollar sale? Not quite… Mack would need to have some investors join in with him to purchase the Rockets with him. Mack would most likely be the Majority Owner, so his group might not have too many big names in it, unless they plan on splitting the wealth.

#3 Beyoncé

Now, I am fully for Beyoncé to have a very little part in the Houston ownership group, however, I don’t want this to be branded into something completely different. That is the main reason why I am worried to have Beyoncé take any part in ownership of the Rockets because of what it could become. Anyways, she doesn’t have the money to fully buy they anyway, so she would most likely be a minority owner, only repping Houston (as usual) and getting the money back through sales and other profits. This would be a smart move for her, and her family already has basketball ownership experience as Jay Z already owns a little percentage of the Nets.

#4 Hakeem The Dream

Fan Favorite. Houston Legend. Hakeem Olajuwon. Why would you NOT want this man to invest in your franchise? When a former legend takes ownership in a franchise, many older fans tend to come back to the franchise and spend more money because of the player they supported over how many years ago. This would bring a lot of old Rockets fans back together and would also bring a lot of the new fans who respect Hakeem for everything he has done for this team. This would be the greatest PR move for the franchise in a while. Now, Hakeem doesn’t have the money, but he could easily assemble a buying group to get a couple of people on board to join him. Hakeem doesn’t care about becoming a majority owner, so he would be fine not having to fork over a ton of cash and to become one of the head guys making the decisions. He would want to have a little bit of say though. How about a super team of Mack, Beyoncé and Hakeem? That would be a better Big-3 than Harden-CP3-Melo…
