It's A Houston Thing

Daryl Morey says the Rockets "need to take risks" to compete with the Warriors

Posted by Devon Bennett on

Houston General Manager Daryl Morey recently went on a podcast with Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA’s best insiders. Many things were discussed throughout the podcast such as the sale of the Rockets, James Harden, the acquisition of CP3. There was one quote that Morey said which made me put on my thinking hat and tried to analyze the quote even further. Maybe Morey is hinting at something we have all been waiting for a while now.

In the middle of the interview, Morey had an interesting response to Adrian’s question about catching up the Warriors. Morey responded with, “To close the gap with the Warriors, we have to take risks, ones that may not even make sense to some people on the surface.” (Woj ESPN Pod). This quote is very interesting because it could allude to two things. One, is the acquisition of CP3 over the off-season and everyone scratched their heads on how two ball dominant point guards could end up working together. The second, and my hopeful, is the Carmelo Anthony theory, in which everybody besides Houston fans it seems, believes Melo would be a horrible fit on the Rockets with the two most ball dominant PG’s in the league. This is a simple way to think about how the fit would go, which with more analysis and film study, could easily tell the opposite.

On the outside, yes, it would be a horrible fit if Melo were to stay the same as he was in New York. The thing is, he won’t have to be only-superstar Melo anymore. He will have 2 other playmakers and scorers near him to do all the work. The quote from Morey seems to hint that he still indeed wants to make some more moves, no matter how much sense it makes. With a coach as great as Mike D’Antoni, I don’t think Daryl is worried about fit anymore. Morey is purely seeking talent to fill roster spots to out defend, and to (hopefully) out shoot the warriors. The Rockets are one of the top teams in the west, but there is still a good-sized gap between the Warriors, and the Rockets/Spurs. Everyone can agree on that. To Morey, it looks like Melo could be the final player to complete this roster to compete against the super team.

Everybody has been waiting for the Melo trade to happen, or at least to have an update, but it has been dry on the news lately for him. Once the news breaks, keep it here to be updated as soon as it happens.
